There are about 11 million people in Vietnam living in poverty. Each passing day without access to medical care leads to more deaths from diseases that are easily treated in the U.S. Children are forced out of school and onto the streets to beg because they can no longer pay for their education. Newborns are abandoned because their parents cannot afford to care for them. Medical, Educational Missions & Outreach (M.E.M.O.) was founded in order to address these issues.
M.E.M.O. (Medical, Educational Missions and Outreach) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, student-run, humanitarian organization that seeks to serve the underprivileged by addressing their medical and educational needs. Since 2007, volunteer students, physicians, and other health professionals have collaborated to expand M.E.M.O. and its programs. Our members fundraise for programs in Vietnam as sustainable ways to improve the health and well-being of the underserved, locally and internationally.
Once a year, a select group of volunteers comprised of students from UCLA, UCI, and UCSD have the opportunity to travel to Vietnam with physicians and serve the underprivileged community. By supplying the impoverished villagers with fundamental needs (health and education), M.E.M.O. hopes to give them a foundation in which they can raise themselves out of their current living conditions. M.E.M.O. also aims to spread awareness of the abject poverty seen in developing countries to the younger generation in the United States, propagating the notion of social responsibility to create a brighter future.
