To educate the UCLA community on the prevalence of hydrocephalus in Vietnam and raise funds to provide prenatal care, MEMO at UCLA hosted its first ever Hydrocephalus Awareness Night on February 26th, 2016.
The night featured performances by Meiko, a songwriter whose songs have been played in major network TV shows, and J.R. Aquino, a YouTube singer and previous contestant on American Idol and The Voice. Audience members had their breaths taken away by Meiko's lovely vocals and Aquino's soulful singing, while lucky winners of the serenade raffles had the chance to see their favorite singers perform right in front of them. Attendees were educated on hydrocephalus and its impact on rural Vietnamese communities through informative presentations. In addition, Meiko, who doubled as the keynote speaker, spoke about her personal experiences with the disease.
The carnival-themed night included raffles to raise money for prenatal care (for the prevention of hydrocephalus), carnival games, a face-painting booth and a photo booth. Complimentary food and refreshments were also provided. Weeks of hard work from our MEMObers paid off as HCAN 2016 was a success. Thank you to everyone who helped prepare for HCAN, volunteered their time or came out to our event. HCAN 2016 couldn't have happened without your support!
