This week, MEMO collaborated with the LA Child Guidance Clinic to host Family Funfest: a special event dedicated to educating the southcentral LA community on mental health awareness. The community-based event saw the establishment of a resource fair to accomplish its goal. Families came out to enjoy music, free food, pony rides, book fairs, and children arts and crafts centers. Our very own MEMObers held a face painting booth for the children that attended!

For the second general meeting of the quarter, we had a special event for all the MEMObers! MEMO held a panel night, where we had graduate students currently pursuing health careers come together and offer advice, insight into their careers, and answer questions. Guest speakers at the panel came from backgrounds in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dental, optometry and more! Some graduates were previously MEMObers themselves, so it was a night of education and reminiscence for people that attended the event!
[WEEK 2 GENERAL MEETING] MEMO welcomed back returning and new MEMObers at the first general meeting of Spring quarter! Everyone was so excited to see each other and to hear spring break stories. During the meeting, MEMO board did a recap of MEMO's events here at UCLA and invited everyone to upcoming ones. We talked about fundraiser and social events and the Annual Open Our Hearts Gala. Also, the new board for year 2018-2019 was also introduced in the meeting. And before we ended the meeting, we awarded certificates and surprises to our MEMObers of the month-- Amy Cruz and Nicole Tran! Thank you for your participation and dedication to MEMO!
[PORTO'S FUNDRAISER] We had our first fundraiser of the quarter, Porto's Fundraiser at Bruinwalk! [SPONSORSHIP RUN AT UCLA] MEMObers walked around Westwood and asked businesses around for donations and sponsorship to support our upcoming GALA and mission trip. We had our last general meeting of the quarter! MEMObers talked about the upcoming Annual Open Our Hearts Gala and we also had fun making bracelets for the children in Vietnam afterwards!
Wednesday of week 7, February 21st, marked a special occasion. MEMO at UCLA held its very first Healing Hearts: A Cardiovascular Disease Awareness Night. This night aimed at educating the UCLA population on the prevalence and effects of cardiovascular disease both locally and abroad. The board, interns, and general volunteers at MEMO had prepared extensively since fall quarter for this event and the outcome was amazing! Ackerman Grand Ballroom was full of pretty heart-themed decorations, student booths from different UCLA organizations shared information, raffles were made, auctions were held, and there was an amazing performance by none other than Joseph Vincent! But he was not the only one who performed that night; UCLA’s Kyodo Taiko and Foundations Dance Team also guest starred that night, captivating the eyes and ears of everyone that attended. We also had guest speaker and physician Dan Tran to inform everyone of his firsthand experience with cardiovascular disease. Overall, the night was a wonderful time for all who joined us in our cause to battle the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in California and Vietnam. Thank you to all the wonderful MEMObers that helped make this night so special!!!
A new winter quarter marked the beginning of a new MEMOship. This week’s general meeting was a special one because at the end of it, MEMObers finally got to find out who their mentors and mentees were going to be for the rest of 2018! The evening began with a nice ice-breaker (a Disney-themed version of Telephone) hosted by our beloved board members Lanzel and Cindy. After that, the MEMO board made a presentation to inform everyone of upcoming events like the Tet festival and the Healing Hearts awareness night. This was followed by a moment of recognition for two outstanding MEMObers of the month of November – congratulations Linda Do and Mimi Giang! Finally, the meeting concluded with a fun discovery of mentors and mentees. While the future mentors were hiding behind a long curtain (exposing only their feet), Mentees had to match their assigned socks to the ones their mentors were wearing. Once everyone was in place, the curtain dropped, and everyone got to meet their new MEMOship partner! Go MEMOship 2018!!!
