To celebrate the joy of starting a new year, M.E.M.O. opened 2018 with a White Elephant gift exchange!! MEMObers came together and exchanged their gifts with fellow friends to take home a nice token of friendship from one MEMOber to another. It was an evening of joy and reminiscence as members exchanged gifts, enjoyed some hot chocolate, ate candy, and shared fun stories from their 2017 winter break! However, gifts were not the only things that were exchanged; people shared plenty of laughter as someone opened a gift by that took them by surprise, and as people would “steal” each other’s current gift! Overall, MEMObers had a lot of fun in starting a fresh new quarter with their newfound gifts.

Welcome back everyone!! We hope you had a happy holiday :D
There are a lot of exciting things coming up this quarter including our MEMOship Revelation, Healing Hearts Awareness Night, Interchapter Social at UCLA, Mission Trip Application and more! Once again, we always welcome new MEMObers to join us. If you are interested, please follow the 3 easy steps below!!
We value and take note of your dedication, so make sure to stay active within M.E.M.O and attend as many meetings and events as you can. Priority for the medical mission trip will be given to those who participated and stayed involved throughout the year. During Week 9’s general meeting, MEMObers split up into groups of potential mentees and mentors for our mentorship program, MEMOship, which pairs up old and new members to allow more experienced members to provide advice and useful insight about the organization, UCLA, and life in general to their mentee. Mentor-mentee pairs are able to participate in a variety of activities together, allowing for the opportunity of the growth of a valuable friendship as well! After a few brief announcements about past and upcoming events as well as a brief explanation of the meeting’s itinerary, potential mentees were paired up with their potential mentors and played a speed-dating game for pairs to introduce themselves and have a brief conversation, with icebreaker questions projected on the board to facilitate discussion. Mentee-Mentor pairs rotated every couple minutes, giving members a great chance to meet and get to know each other with every round!
MEMO’s Thanksgiving Potluck Social and Care Package Drive was both a social for old and new MEMObers to gather, share delicious food, and get to know each other better as well as a service event where donated goods were assembled into care packages and distributed to the homeless around Westwood. For the Thanksgiving Potluck, MEMObers signed up to bring a variety of delicious food items to share, such as spicy fried rice, glass noodles, mashed potatoes, bakery bread, cookies, homemade teas, and more! Everyone enjoyed a heaping plate of hot food and was able to chat and mingle with other members! MEMObers then began assembling care packages after their Thanksgiving feast for the Care Package service event, each including a warm and personal note wishing recipients a wonderful holiday season. MEMObers then divided into teams, were given procedural instructions in distributing packages, and were sent out on various routes across Westwood to spread joy and hope to the local community.
At Week 6’s general meetings, MEMObers started off with an icebreaker hosted by the interns. New and returning members split into two groups to play name-games (“Bang!”) to introduce themselves and get to know each other better. After, MEMObers settled down as the board members introduced MEMOship Program and recapped recent events (One-on-One Outreach, ICS social) and spoke about upcoming events, like the Thanksgiving Potluck and Care Package social and the upcoming week 7 committee meeting that will continue planning for Healing Hearts. October members of the month were announced as well: congratulations to Tevan Luong and Jason Li! At the end of the meeting, MEMObers were split into three groups, this time for a game of MEMO trivia-based Jeopardy testing our knowledge on MEMO programs, history, mission trips, and more. At the end, every MEMOber left with as a winner, as candy was awarded to all participants after the meeting.
On November 4th, our MEMObers went to Corona Del Mar beach to participate in the quarterly interchapter social between UCLA, UCI, and UCSD, hosted by MEMO UCI’s Celeste Montalvo. MEMObers, alumni, and even guests from all around southern California were divided into ten groups and participated in various ice-breakers and bonding games, from name-game bingo, to team photoshoot contests, to sand-castle building contests, and a relay race! There was also a lunch period in between scheduled events, when MEMObers were able to freely mingle and get to know other MEMObers as well!
During Week 5’s Committee meeting, MEMObers began planning MEMO’s Healing Hearts: A Cardiovascular Disease Awareness Night. The purpose Healing Hearts is to raise awareness of cardiovascular health conditions in Vietnam and underprivileged communities in California. MEMObers were able to choose to participate in various outreach committees contributing to the awareness night: decorations, fundraising, publicity, and social media. Decorations committee began coming up with ideas regarding event theme, color schemes, and decoration ideas. Fundraising committee began thinking about potential fundraising events and contacting potential sponsors and donors. The publicity community began brainstorming video ideas and writing the script for the awareness night’s promotional video. And finally, the social media committee began to plan and design promotional graphics by brainstorming ideas for flyers and Facebook banners. All in all, a great start towards planning the awareness night scheduled in February!
MEMO is not just all about providing help in Vietnam but we also try to make a difference in our local community! We collaborated with One on One Outreach to help improve the lives of low-income families in S. Central Los Angeles neighborhood. MEMObers packed and delivered boxes of groceries to the families in need. It was such a great and meaningful weekend for everyone!
How was everyone's summer? We've missed you all! We can't wait to see everyone again :D
