The first general meeting of winter quarter began with an exciting ice breaker! MEMObers enthusiastically formed a circle around the meeting space, taking turns introducing themselves and showcasing their "signature moves". This allowed members to quickly and easily become acquainted, which created a fun and relaxed environment. The MEMO Board then announced the upcoming 11G mission trip, explaining how the Medical, Heart, Dental, Scholarship, and Hope Programs enable many people in Vietnam to receive the medical supplies and educational resources they currently lack. Ultimately, this meeting was an opportunity for MEMObers, whether new or old, to form a more closely-knit community through a unique game of introductions while also becoming more aware of the mission trip's purpose as they listened to past mission-goers' stories about Vietnam.

This week of Halloween, MEMObers came out to a Week 6 General Meeting filled with spirited activities! This week, MEMObers learned more about MEMO’s history—about how MEMO has greatly grown in the number and extent of its different chapters, programs, and mission trips, as well as the organization’s present-day trajectories—by participating in a spirited game of Jeopardy filled with fun, teamwork, and candy! This week’s GM not only highlighted the importance of individual contributions to MEMObers to the growth of the organization, but also emphasized the teamwork—whether it be in playing games or in promoting the values that MEMO fosters—that makes MEMO the great organization it is today.
"During Week 5 Committee meeting, MEMObers began planning for the eagerly awaited Symphony of Scholarships (S.O.S.) event. All members were grouped into two committees: Video and Publicity Committees. The Video group created ideas on how they will attract attention from UCLA community to learn more about this event. They listed potential scenarios that will be used in the video. Meanwhile, the Publicity group focused on publicizing the event on different social media platforms. They came up with possible theme of the event and new techniques for generating publicity, like creating geofilters in snapchat. They also discussed about the potential performers from UCLA group dancers/singers and local artists. Everyone actively participated and shared their own ideas.
UCLA’s MEMO collaborated with our UCSD and Irvine chapters to help MEMO Nonprofit pull off our annual health fair at the Westminster Boys and Girls Club. Our doctors, medical staff, and trained volunteers assisted over 1000 patients who attended the health fair to receive free health screenings, consultations, and medical services. This event played a huge role in helping relieve healthcare access discrepancies with underserved populations in the Orange County.
At this week’s general meeting, MEMObers were introduced to MEMO’s Scholarship Program where full-year educational scholarships are given to underprivileged students in Vietnam. By learning about the disparity in Vietnam’s educational system, MEMObers were able to understand how children in Vietnam can benefit from one of MEMO’s premier programs. MEMObers were also informed of the various fundraising programs and how they can get involved.
We've missed all of you! Hopefully you've missed us? And, for those who are interested in joining MEMO, welcome! We hope you stay!

(: To educate the UCLA community on the prevalence of hydrocephalus in Vietnam and raise funds to provide prenatal care, MEMO at UCLA hosted its first ever Hydrocephalus Awareness Night on February 26th, 2016.
The night featured performances by Meiko, a songwriter whose songs have been played in major network TV shows, and J.R. Aquino, a YouTube singer and previous contestant on American Idol and The Voice. Audience members had their breaths taken away by Meiko's lovely vocals and Aquino's soulful singing, while lucky winners of the serenade raffles had the chance to see their favorite singers perform right in front of them. Attendees were educated on hydrocephalus and its impact on rural Vietnamese communities through informative presentations. In addition, Meiko, who doubled as the keynote speaker, spoke about her personal experiences with the disease. The carnival-themed night included raffles to raise money for prenatal care (for the prevention of hydrocephalus), carnival games, a face-painting booth and a photo booth. Complimentary food and refreshments were also provided. Weeks of hard work from our MEMObers paid off as HCAN 2016 was a success. Thank you to everyone who helped prepare for HCAN, volunteered their time or came out to our event. HCAN 2016 couldn't have happened without your support! College is a time for students to explore their interests and to learn more about the careers and pathways that they will want to pursue. To help MEMObers learn more about health-related careers, MEMO was glad to welcome a group of panelists during Week 8 GM! Our panelists included a UCLA undergraduate student (whose aspiration is to become an optometrist), a medical school student (from UCLA's own David Geffen School of Medicine), a pharmacist, and a nurse. Members were able to get insight into what medical school is like, what sort of responsibilities pharmacists have, what patient-interactions are like as a nurse, and about opportunities to get involved with optometry. In addition, the panelists shared their own how they arrived at where they are today--their aspirations and inspirations.
They were all in our position at one point in their lifetime. They reminded us about the importance of having a passion for what you do. Although the medical path may be long, difficult, and stressful, if you have a passion for what you do--in helping others--you will find it to be a rewarding experience. During Week 7 committee meeting, MEMObers were working hard on finishing the rest of the decorations and preparations for HCAN! With the event a week away, everyone was busy working to ensure that everything was completed on time. Music was played and MEMObers got to work! We’ve planned extra hard on this event and are super excited to see it come together! We hope to see you there on February 26th!
Two weeks until HCAN! This week's general meeting was focused on the Hope program where we support several orphanages in Vietnam. We also visit some of those orphanages on the mission trip where many of the children have cerebral palsy, blindness, hydrocephalus, and Down syndrome to set up triage to assess patients, a free dental clinic and to play with the children. After the presentation, all the members made creative animal bookmarks to send back to the orphanages. Thanks to everyone for helping! Also, congratulations to the "Memober of the Month", Chananid Sun Laikijrung!
